It's no secret that I love to travel. Whether it be a transatlantic voyage or a day trip to the mountains, you can probably count me in. But travel can quickly move from an amazingly freeing and relaxing experience, to one that is stressful with minor hiccups. I've found that being prepared and having a few little things can help tremendously with managing travel. Here are some of the items I never leave for a trip without!
1. Carry-on bag
A durable carry-on bag is a must for any travel. Not only for flying, but for quickly squeezing on a bus, train, or in a car. My new favorite is a LeSportSac that I got for Christmas, but any durable, roomy bag will do. Mine has 3 outside zipper pockets. I love this because it provides easy access to important items like my passport and phone, but with the safety of zippers that many bags don't offer. It's also water resistant, which is helpful what with my major klutz status.
2. Hair Ties
Not once has my hair looked good after a flight. Having a hair tie is something I tend to do all the time anyway, but I'm especially mindful of it while traveling. Any hair tie that doesn't squeeze the living daylights out of your wrist works, but I love the thick ones that don't kink your hair when you pull it back. I'm also a HUGE fan of bracelet style ones I got it my stocking, but for the life of me I can't find them online. Moral of the story: no one's hair looks good after a day of travel. And if yours does, I don't want to talk to you. (Just kidding, I totally do. I'm just majorly jealous).
3. Phone Charger
For whatever reason, I always go through more phone battery when I travel. Which is odd since it's on airplane mode for the majority of the trip. But it's gotten so bad my friends and family have demanded I get an external charger, so here we are. I got a Mophie keychain-sized one that gives my phone 50% battery, but there are lots of options. Even some cute ones!
4. iPhone camera lens
This. This is my new obsession. It's amazing. There are a few of these on the market but this is the best I've seen thus far. It's a Sony lens that's compatible with any iPhone or Android phone, has 10x optical zoom, 20.4-megapixel images, and wireless connectivity. It's essentially like having a DSLR without all the space (and without manual focus, unfortunately). It can snap on to your phone or be held separately, and takes AMAZING shots. I can't wait to play with it more!
5. Good sunglasses
I don't mean good as in designer, I mean good as in, "I can throw these things in my backpack and they can fall off my head without me worrying they're going to be smashed to smithereens." I recently was given a pair from the TOMS traveller collection. They're incredibly durable, cute, and provide sight to a person in need! What more could you ask for?
6. Collapsable water bottle
Doesn't take up space. No need to pay $5 for airport water after security. Nuff said.
7. Travel journal
I know this sounds cliché in the world of smart phones and the cloud, but I still find so many uses for paper journals when I'm on the road. Jotting down places I want to go or quick phrases in the native language, having a quick way to reference things, in addition to writing down my favorite experiences is actually super useful.
Do you have any other things you can't live without when traveling?
