Hiking is one of my favorite pastimes from childhood. Growing up in Colorado and not being a skier or snowboarder is basically unheard of, but I made up for it in the summer months. It certainly helps that my school insanely thought it’d be a brilliant idea to force 20+ middle school children to backpack into the wilderness for 3 days, go rock climbing in Moab, and white water rafting on some river I’d rather forget about given how terrified I was. But in all seriousness, I love the outdoors. Growing up in a place with such natural beauty has had a huge impact on my life. My first attempt at hiking without all my favorite snacks (read puppy chow, cheap trail mix, and Clif Bars) was an epic fail. I was starving by the end of it and really didn’t enjoy myself because I was so hungry. I finally found some great fillers for the usual snacks I used to love (they’re even a little healthier!). Here are my 4 favorite things to bring hiking to curb hunger!
1. Dried Fruit
Doesn’t go bad. Doesn’t have added sugar. Great for some quick energy. What more could you ask for?
2. Almond Butter Packets
These aren’t super easy to eat while actually hiking, but they’re a great option for taking a break to get some protein. You can eat plain, or have with fruit or gluten free pretzels.
3. NoGii Bars
I love these for a multitude of reasons. They’re paleo, have protein and natural sugar, and can’t melt like chocolate-based snack bars.
4. Gluten Free Puppy Chow
This one takes a bit of prep, but is now doable with Chex’s Gluten Free Cereal! Check out the recipe on their site to make yourself this amazing post-hike snack.
